The Wainwright Archive

A unique private collection of Wainwright memorabilia and artefacts

Chris has spared no expense to build an extensive archive of Wainwright books & memorabilia.

Assembling Wainwright's entire publishing & printing history

  • All editions and print variations of every Alfred Wainwright book
  • Every original printing negative for all twelve pictorial guides
  • Final Kendal printed sheets for the seven Lakeland pictorial guides
  • All printing material for other Wainwright books including Fellwanderer, Ex-Fellwanderer & Wainwright in Lakeland
  • Original Wainwright manuscript for Fellwalking with a Camera, much of it never published
  • Thousands of original, unused dust jackets for book editions going back decades
  • Original sketches & book artwork
  • Memorabilia including letters & photographs
  • More than 3000 books, including 70+ signed by Wainwright
  • All part of an archive involving many miles of travel to source its unique content!

A Look inside the archive

If Chris hadn't come along when he did, the printing material could have been lost forever.

David Rigg

Another Look Inside the Archive

Much of the resurgence in interest in AW and his work has been down to Chris Butterfield and his diligence in discovering (and sharing) Wainwright material hidden away for years.
